John Henry Cardinal Newman introduced the distinction between a “liberal” and a “dogmatic” principle for interpreting Christian revelation.

The liberal principle accepts the truths of God’s revelation in Christ only to the extent that they cohere with natural reason, correspond to pious feelings, or serve the needs of civil society (cf. Apologia, chap. 2).
